Woodward's Gardens, Mission and Duboce Streets, c. 1885

Robert B. Woodward opened his six-acre gardens to the public between 1866 and 1994 as an amusement park, and it became the City's most popular resort. It included an extensive museum of foreign zoological and mineral specimens, exotic plant conservatories, an art gallery, a marine aquarium, lakes with fountains and cascades, and many variety shows.
